On July 4, 32 pupils from grades 5 to 10, accompanied by Thomas Strauch and Frank Bohlscheid, who both teach astronomy courses at Hollenberg-Gymnasium Waldbröl, set off to visit the school observatory in Schnörringen. The project description had announced that, if the weather was good, we would also be able to take a look at the sun – but apart from the fact that it was light that morning, the sun did not make an appearance; instead, we set off in the rain, which accompanied us constantly and eventually soaked us to the skin. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of this, the mood was good, even though the only thing we did to observe the sun that day was to guess where it might be in the deep gray sky. We spent about an hour at the observatory, where Frank Bohlscheid gave a talk on the origins of the sun and then showed the students the large telescope and the SchoolLabs. Unfortunately, that was all we could do that day, but some of the pupils were impressed by the opportunities available to them. We were so wet that we didn’t take any photos – the lenses were fogged up from the rain and heat. In the afternoon, by the way, we celebrated a school party at the school – in mostly beautiful weather….
