Dark clouds and star cluster

Environment of the open star cluster IC1396 (Elephant Trunk Nebula – lower image border) with dark clouds in the constellation Kepheus. The nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas range at a distance of about 2,400 light years. The nebula region is ionized by stellar light, the dark clouds consist of dust and absorb the light of the stars behind.

Taken with an Alccd10 detector on a 115mm Apo lens telescope at 630mm focal length and 150 minutes exposure time.
